When many people think of October, they think of Halloween, but it is also Dental Hygiene Month. Considering the overwhelming volume of candy consumed during this season, it’s an exceedingly good time to consider the importance of proper oral care and look for ways to improve our own dental cleaning routines. Here are three oral care habits that will keep your smile healthy, white, and shiny.
Think of the Germs You Can Crush When You Consistently Brush!
Brushing your teeth is a crucial part of maintaining your oral health because it eliminates plaque and decreases the likelihood of cavities and gum disease. You should be brushing at least twice a day, once after breakfast and once before bed while taking care to wait thirty minutes after eating. It’s best to use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. To brush most effectively, follow these five steps:
- Hold your toothbrush so it forms a 45-degree angle with the gums.
- Brush gently back and forth with short strokes.
- Brush the teeth’s front-facing and chewing surfaces in this position.
- Reposition the toothbrush vertically before brushing the inner surfaces with short strokes.
- End with brushing your tongue to eliminate bacteria.
Show Bacteria Who’s Boss: Regularly Use Dental Floss!
You should floss your teeth at least once a day, ideally around the time you brush your teeth at night. Dental floss can clean surfaces that a toothbrush cannot reach while also eliminating food particles that can cause discomfort if they remain stuck between the teeth. It also helps eliminate plaque that, if allowed to accumulate, will harden into tartar.
The Thought Makes Germs Wince: Have an Antibacterial Mouthwash Rinse!
While it shouldn’t be used to replace brushing, it also shouldn’t be thought of as extra credit or an optional measure for clean freaks. While brushing and flossing focus on cleaning the teeth, mouthwash kills bacteria all around the mouth. A good rinse with antibacterial mouthwash every day will prevent tooth decay and gum disease while gifting you with fresh, minty breath.
While kids are getting excited for Halloween this October, be sure to remind them of the importance of proper oral hygiene. The sooner kids learn about the importance of maintaining oral health, the better off they will be.
